Hi,
It was time for the six month dermatology visit yesterday. I have a love-hate relationship with my doctor. He is awesom. Christopher Miller is a brilliant, sweet, thorough, knife wielding physician who takes pride in his work and pleasure in cutting off little bits of me. He would have been a huge hit in the Inquisition.
The trick with melanoma type cancer is to stay ahead of the game. Biannual visits to a dermatologist are a must. These medical practitioners have wacky X-ray vision style glasses that see things we don't ever want to know about, but must be dealt with. Rogue cells. The search and destroy techniques of a dermotologist are his strengths. If they can catch things as pin head size problems, and eliminate them quickly, they can save you a whole lot of pain and huge scars later.... But those little pin head problem cells are no fun, no matter how small they are.
Dr. Miller is one of the best. He is seemingly kind, patient and caring. He also loves his work, a little too much. I have seen the look of disappointment in his eyes when there are no new 'spots' to irradicate on my skin. Yesterday he was in his glory as he pounced on three spots that didn't pass his muster. I appreciate his concern and thoroughness but it's the glee that I wish he would tone down.
It's a session of becoming his personal pin cushion that I get queasy about. The hospital is very good about not wanting me to pass out so they chill me out with fun drugs with a chaser of Apple juice first. That helps. Marshall is there to hold my hand and keep me occupied thinking about anything other than what they are doing to me. It is all over and done with in an hour. From signing away the rights to my biopsy specimens to finally getting clothes on again, three new little spots have bit the dust. I have a six month reprieve before having to get inspected again and new war wounds to show off.
Yes, my body looks like a tic-tax-toe board but it is cancer free. Success!
I wish I could grow some height with the same efficiently I grow melanoma..... Oh well, another on bites the dust.
